"To adjoin the instinctual nature . . . means to establish territory, find one's pack, be in one's body with certainty and pride; to speak ... act ... be aware, alert, draw on the innate feminine powers of intuition . . . to rise with dignity, to retain as much consciousness as we can." - Clarissa Pinkola Estes. In both evening and morning circles, writing between meetings is expected. When we gather, we write together and share our writing. In small groups, we bring writing we have worked on in the week(s) between, asking for specific feedback from the group to help us 'dream our dream onward' (thank you, Nellie Morton!). In the larger group, we often discuss issues of common interest to us as writing women; as well as instructive or thought-provoking readings. In addition, we often bring visual and other creative activities into the circle. We welcome new and experienced writers; those writing for pleasure and for purpose. This has allowed us to continue the program, which goes into its third year in January at the women's new location in Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility. Check out the dedicated blog. Gratitude to Vermont Works for Women for their support in this endeavor! [The following poem was written from this program, and is composed of lines written by all the participants in a given session.] a story told in the eyes I never see the hidden me - the forest of my reality energy and way of thinking, unbridled compassion for my self as necessities. I think I know myself green eyes tiny flaws the me I long to be. Trying to please others I see myself, my beauty, for the first time. That’s what I see, my heart. We’re meant to dig deeper, see heart and soul; no rewind, no redo; to trace myself. Eyes full of wonder, see outward dig deeper. [for more poems, visit our writinginsideVT]
Image created by 'Touch Drawing,'as developed by Deborah Koff-Chapin,using fingers and hands pressed against tissue laid over a board rolled with paint. One of the art workshops this spring, Touch Drawing is about the process of responding to what lies within; rather than focusing on a finished product. As many as 20 images may be produced in one working session. The images are then written to. The entire process tends to produce tremendous insights for the individual.
This bowl was created from fabric and tissue paper strips placed over an inverted mold, working from the inside out. Thanks to local artist Dianne Shullenberger for her leadership of this workshop.
